Make something.

Make it last a lifetime (or longer, who knows).

Start small. A hat. It’s not too hard. You can do hard things. It takes time, patience, and probably a few do-overs. But all good things do.

Start here.

The best way to learn to knit is to start (I know that sounds lame). Start with a scarf, or a hat if you’re up for a challenge. You can buy a kit that has the needles, pattern, and yarn, or you can buy each on their own. Don’t start with something that uses very small needles, look for a project for at least 5mm needles. Youtube is a source of endless knowledge for knitting. In particular, Purl Soho has excellent videos on learning to knit. They have great project kits but they tend to be a tad harder than beginner level. We Are Knitters has some great project kits for first-timers. You will mess up. I do, almost every day. And you will get better, and better.

Make things for people you love.
